I don't doubt that there is always the possibility that there could be a problem with the head unit and you're right, depending on the type of head unit, it may only use its own internal aerial as opposed to the bee sting for MW.
I didn't realise that head units were still manufactured that only used their own internal aerial for MW.  :-\

I am the opposite - I didn't realise MW utilised the FM antenna.

But what the hey.

I'm just saying it depends on the head unit.

The bee sting aerial has 2 amplifiers in the base, one for MW and one for FM. My Audi MW amplifier had failed hence I couldn't pick up MW at all. It now works a treat without any interference so I guess my head unit uses the bee sting aerial and its amplifiers. Best ?10 I ever spent, I can listen to all my sport now.  ;D

Sounds like I've started a pretty lively debate!!!

The head unit i'm using is a Sony XR 4440 that I run my cd changer from, but when I got the car I used my panasonic single cd unit for a while and the MW reception didn't work then either.

The power to the aerial interests me. How does that work?. Would that only affect the MW reception?

Any help would be much appreciated as I don't really want to remove the headlining to fit a new aerial.

You use the 'remote amp' wire from your stereo so that when you switch the stereo on, power is then supplied to your aerial.
My FM worked and I had no MW prior to replacing the aerial assembly. On replacing it, My MW worked and my FM improved.
Mine is a Sony head unit too, although probably a much older model.

Changing the aerial on a mk3 isn't too difficult, ive recently swapped my old beesting for a Blaupunkt amplified DAB unit. Running new leads wasn't as easy...
