Greetings from down under.
« on: 08 August 2019, 04:55 »
Hello
I have just joined your Forum and thank you for having me. I have just bought my first GTI, late 2012 auto in red.
Question. It has later model wheels 18x7.5 with 235 tyres. The Golf being a relatively small car is it over tyred with 235"s Strictly road use, should it have 225's,at the moment it feels like it is wearing wellington boots
Cheers
Steven

@wasp; welcome to the forum. You are correct; the tyres on your car are not factory spec - at least not for a UK model.

The standard size tyres for the UK mk6 GTI with factory 18” wheels (7.5j x 18 ET51) are 225/40. Presumably the 235’s on your car are 235/40’s - this would give them a slightly higher sidewall than 225/40’s, which would probably give a slightly more compliant ride than 225/40’s. Maybe that’s why the previous owner fitted them?

Welcome.
The size of tyres the car left the factory with is normally printed on the sticker in the fuel flap cover with the tyre pressures.

235 often catch the screw holding the wheel arch liner when cornering at speed.
It could also affect the gearing depending on the ratio number as it could have an impact on the rolling circumference.  For example a 235/40/18 will be taller than a 225/40/18 which will alter gearing an speedometer accuracy reading and also due to the extra height also more likley to catch the arch.
