Since we got our Mk3 a about a month ago the clutch cable is a bit stiff & creaky, thought it may of been cos the car had been stood for a bit before we bought it, but it's not really improved with driving.....
Does this mean it's on it's way out or will some of that 'magic engine spray' stuff (ha, it seems to fix lots of things...) on it sort it out?
I had one snap on me before, not good fun!

Better to fit a new cable, if left you can snap the release lever in the gearbox.
-
i found mine was just where the top of the pedle was.....spayed it with spray oil and been fine
-
My old one did it for ages and just kept going?! Better get it checked out to be on the safe side, or just carry a replacement cable with you if your in the AA.
-
If it is creaking then it is seizing up, better to replace it asap then leave it to snap or break the release arm.

Mines doing exactly the same mate, doing my head in now
Are these cables supposed to auto adjusting?? If so can i fit a manual adjusting one in it's place?
-
hmm, it's not seizing up or anything......just funds are low at the minute
Don't spose a new cable's too dear though, or tricky to fit? (obviously it won't be me doing the work though! HA!)

It is self adjusting but with underbonnet heat etc they dry out, yes you can if you wish fit a manual adjusting spec from a 1.8 I believe.

are they difficult to change?

No, not really 1hr max.

Had the same and left it, after 2 years the release arm that someone referred too earlier gave in (76k so maybe its expected?) behind the green cap of the gearbox. Changed the arm and clutch for good measure. Anyway with the clutch cable out I sprayed loads of Castrol DWF stolen from work and sprayed the gearbox end of the cable holding it high up so the oil would travel down, worked the clutch and repeated until the noise was gone :) A month ago it started creaking near the clutch pedal, behind the footwell undertray trim, where theres a spring over a white cone-like object, sprayed that too and its all good now.
If you get a new cable I'd grease it a bit anyway but for a quicky fix you could try that.
