Title: What detailing haven't you done today?
Post by: Watts on 14 November 2018, 12:21
I presume we all have good intentions and a list of things to do but for various reasons haven't got around to it. So I thought a thread might allow people here to get it off their chest as afterall, a problem shared and all that

I need to first of all clean my car, inside and out, been on holiday oop north in it plus commuting and lots of days out since we've had guests staying on and off for over a month and it hasn't had so much as a duster inside it! It needs a load of stone chips touching in, a small scrape on the bumper professionally attending to, a good wheels off decontamination, a polish and wax.

Excuses. We've had guests which has taken up all my days off for sometime other than the odd one at a weekend when car cleaning is frowned upon  Today is a bit tricky, dropped said guests off at Heathrow at 8, have the house to myself but as yet, no action in the resolving of the dirty car department. I'm blaming being tired given a long day yesterday with a late boozy night and early rising, definitely not laziness

So, anyone else care to unburden?

My car is in need of a good wash, but there’s currently a distance of 6,700 miles between my car and me, so it’ll have to wait until I’m back in the UK and the miserable UK November weather before I wash it .

At least at this time of year there’s no problem with hard water spots drying on the paintwork before I have a chance to dry it after washing .

Sounds like you making it sound hard work Watts!

Outside - A Golf can be done in about 1hr max (excluding setting up and putting away!) and that's a proper clean.
Inside - max 25-30 mins and thats including cleaning all the glass.

Helps if the car has a nice sealant on though as that makes the job easier

Bloody wheels take best part of an hour alone  I've just been time poor lately, some opportunities coming up soon, weather permiting.

Looks like either I'm the only one not doing any cleaning (at least without a 7000 mile excuse) or the only one admitting to it. Or no-one else gives a monkeys about discussing it! Option 3 me thinks...

My Amarok is looking grim. I'm keeping on top of the interior, but it's not been washed for many weeks and being a working truck that gets the odd close encounter with foliage, the DPB paint isn't looking its best. It will probably go through the winter with the odd wash at a very good hand washing place that I have found, then get a full pro correction detail in the spring. I had it done when I first got it, so will be going back for more of the same.

The Tig get a bit more personal love, but nowhere near as much time as I'd give cars up to around 5 years ago. Life, work, cycling gets in the way. Besides, whilst it's nice to have a clean car, we are only custodians, so the beneficiary of all the hard work is the next owner, and will they care? Probably not.

Anywhere nice?

I'm in the same boat, my car has been tucked away since the summer and won't be touched until I get back to the UK next year

I will make it up to him though with a service and new tyres as soon as I get home

Hope you are both somewhere nice!

I will be using mine through the winter and I can't believe how much dirt is caught on the rear lip. I keep pouring water over it as a v temporary measure but it's definitely the 'detailing I haven't done today'!

Hog_hedge and andy28, I was in Singapore visiting an ex-pat friend who lives and works there. Unfortunately I’m back in the UK now, and a bit of a shock to the system coming from 27-30 degrees of warmth back to 5-6 degrees, wind and rain.

Yes, this time of year, the rear lip - in fact the whole rear end - of any modern ‘two box’ hatchback car gets very dirty; a consequence of the shape of the car and road spray and dirt getting ‘sucked’ onto rear when the car’s moving forward. Not the nicest time of year for keeping a car clean, and when it is, it doesn’t stay looking that way for long!

The rear of the Golf seems to have been designed to create a massive low pressure area, and consequently sucks up all of the water and crud which passes under the car and deposits it on the rear screen and bumper.

The only way to stop it is to have a diffuser like the one used by Aston Martin on their GT racers:

Beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder, and the results achieved in the wind tunnel.

For now, we Golfists are condemned to regularly washing our rear ends.

Not just the Golf. Pretty much all ‘two box’ hatchbacks irrespective of the manufacturer also suffer from a dirty rear end when the roads are wet, muddy or, at this time of year, covered in road salt.

Aerodynamics have moved on tho'. The Mk2 would completely plaster its rear end. The modern cars manage to channel the air and muck to the middle of the tailgate, keeping the outer lights clear for as long as possible.

Can't say I'd noticed that but now you mention it, yes, in fact I find the majority of the muck just sitting on top of the bumper.

I'm stuck indoors with a knee problem, so the car will sit in my parking bay accumulating dust.

I'm grateful that I spent some time on it last weekend, cleaned the wheels and applied some GTechniq C5, treated the black trim with Autofinesse Dressle and waxed the sides and tailgate with Autofinesse Radiance, so I'll just leave it for a few days.

Still sounds pretty clean though Dr Mike, mine is disgraceful, I can hardly see out the back window! I could've washed it yesterday but it was a bit nippy out so I didn't fancy it  Perhaps next week

Hope you knee feels better soon

It's chucking it down outside, with winds of 40mph+.

I have decided that snow foaming would not be a good idea today.  The car had a good wash with lots of water sprayed over and under it due to Hampshire County Council's attempts to dispense their salt mountain over the roads, so having washed all of the crud and salt off on Tuesday, that will have to suffice for this week.

I'm awaiting Rebecca's post where she has a special marquee erected for the sole purpose of car washing, with under-car sprays using the finest reverse-osmosis spring water, and specially imported exotic snow foam which makes the plastered-on mud fall away, leaving the car immaculate and putting the rest of us to shame.

Again.

Why I’ve just set that very arrangement up!   The angel tear snowfoam is just about to go on.

Or maybe I haven’t done any of that

Mine looks as per the last pics but now with added layer of encrusted mud, and another hefty helping of salt!

Today was set for a really good wash, weather ideal, cool and cloudy with no rain until early evening. Managed to do the wash but by the time I got to the rinse and drying stage it was raining. Not too hard but drying was very tricky. Bugger

I've seen the weather forecast for the rest of the week, and I literally won't be bothering.

I have, however, bought a couple of litres of Gyeon Bathe+, and Gyeon QD.  I never fail to be impressed by the beading from Bathe+, even a quick wash produces a really satisfying result.

Until next week, then.

Hopefully it'll pass, I'm going to make an official complaint to BBC weather

I keep looking at the weather forecast, which is predicting "feels like" temperatures of around 3c for the next week or so.

I'm glad that I managed to get some pre-winter cleaning and protection done on the car last month, so I'll wait until it becomes a bit less cold before I get the pressure washer and snow foam out.  At least there's not much rain predicted for a few days.

Gave the inside a quick dust, vacuum and wipe down today. The outside was absolutely minging though, how any of you who live in more rural areas cope I've no idea! Most of the muck was from just 3 days in Norfolk  No time for a proper wash so just power washed to get the worst of it off. Also in my mind was that my trip to Dorset tomorrow was unlikely to be helpful in maintaining any shine gained today...

It's de rigueur to have a dirty car in the sticks at this time of year. On the outside anyway. The dirtier the better actually. Nice cars look pretty mean when they are properly dirty.

I just had to dust my GTI off.

I did ten miles last week to go shopping in Waitrose.  The previous week I did seven miles, to go shopping in Tesco.  Which is why I went to Waitrose this week.

I'm seriously considering a cover for it, but unless the car is really clean before you put the cover on, you're better off leaving it uncovered.  My parking are is under cover, but open at each end, and the car becomes dusty quite quickly.  It's all a bit of a "first world problem", and there are far more important things to worry about right now, but it's a bit frustrating.

Just got back from a Waitrose trip myself, 22 mile round trip. My car is disgusting, to make matters worse I had to wash the dust off the windows before going as it was pretty thick so now it's got dirt runs all down the sides and rear too . Hopefully I'll wash it sometime next week...

Once again, due to the Bubonic Plague or whatever it's called, I've managed to use about half a tank of fuel in the last five weeks, and the car just sits in the Batcave collecting dust.

Tomorrow, an electrician will instal a power socket in the afore-mentioned Batcave, which means that I will be able to use my power washer, car dryer, and battery conditioner without having to faff about with extension leads, using wooden blocks to hold doors open in order to avoid the extension lead being severed, and feeling guilty about using a communal socket to plug in to.

Every time I give the car a proper snow foaming I think how much easier it would be if I could just have my own power socket, and I've finally got around to having one installed.  The final straw was the need to plug my CTEK battery conditioner in for a few hours every ten days or so during my incarceration due to COVID.  Having spoken to a few electricians and found that most of them are looking for work, I arranged for some quotes, and a bit of negotiation later it looks as though my wish will be granted.  The installation will be capable of charging an electric car should the need arise - I'm not intending to sell my GTI any time soon, nor am I convinced that electric will be the way of the future, but it made sense to tick that particular box, as the cost of upgrading the cabling is minimal at this stage.

I'm looking forward to getting the power washer and snow foam out at the weekend!

Good move Dr Mike! I find the setting up and putting away of cables, hose and kit a right pain too. My car has to sit outside so is getting filthy. We had a storm though a few days ago and the torrential rain did at least wash the worst off!

I haven't cleaned the inside of the car since the day I got a few weeks ago :( , the mats (well, drivers mat) really needs a good scrub. Also needs a bit of a hoover, and I have an unopened bottle of Dr Leather that I keep forgetting about. The arches could also use a good scrub but I can't be bothered to take the wheels off

Not today but at the weekend; gave my new ‘pocket rocket’ it’s first wash, decontamination and a couple of coats of protection.

Unfortunately it’s that time of year when the sun doesn’t get as high in the sky, so my driveway and car are in shade (good for car washing, but not so good for photos). No ‘before’ or ‘during’ pictures, but here are a few ‘afters’;

Thanks! I did keep it quiet didn’t I . I didn’t say anything over on uk-polos.net forum either until I’d taken delivery (ordered mid Feb, collected last Wednesday, so nearly a 7 month wait). I’ve not had a white car for 24 years, and there’s only five colours to choose from with the GTI (Red, Black, White, Grey or Blue), so white it was.

I’m really liking it. No manual option for the Polo GTI, so this is the first non-manual car I’ve had in over 40 years driving. Compared to the previous generation car, this one is more refined, the ride is more compliant - even on the larger wheels, it’s better equipped and it’s noticeably larger; it takes up almost as much space in my small garage as my mk6 Golf did. It’s the ‘Plus’ model; Plus = lots of extra standard equipment over the normal GTI for not a lot more money, so going for the Plus was a no brainier.

Thought I’d have what might be one last blast in a normal ICE car before being forced down the electric route.

Really struggling to find any time to clean the car lately. I don't think it's been done since before Christmas! Weather doesn't help at all but with such a busy week working, I can't muster the energy to spend the necessary 6-8 hours cleaning the car on a weekend day. Can't wait for the evenings to get lighter!

Same here, I did get a wash in a few weeks ago which was the first since September! Only thing was my bloody pressure washer broke half way through snowfoaming . It's been a bugger to fix too, I replaced a valve on the pump which has got it working but it then developed a leak in the lance. Replaced the seal on the hose where it attaches to the lance but it still leaked so I've had to order a set of seals for the lance now. Hopefully that'll sort it as my wheels are bogging and didn't get washed as they really needed a good spray, so they remain untouched since September :embarrassed:.
