Title: das welt auto extended warranty
Post by: Daveh129 on 12 February 2018, 10:36
Hi,

I am picking up my 2014 GTi on Friday. I am purchasing from Das Welt Auto and have the option to take out an extended warranty for longer than the 1 year standard. Anyone had any dealings with this warranty scheme? is it any good?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Its a pretty good scheme, its a reasonably comprehensive warranty that covers mechanical failure and some other items which some consider wear/tear e.g. shock absorbers too, its worth having a good read through the T&C booklet your dealer will have to decide whether its for you or not.

It is more comprehensive than many third party warranties available, and is manufacturer backed and having any repair work carried out by a Volkswagen dealer will put you in good stead when it comes to goodwill etc too.

It is however worth bearing in mind that often you are liable for any diagnostic charges until it is proven to be a repair that is covered, or not something that is not covered. E.g. if a clutch was slipping you would be liable for cost to remove gearbox and inspect to make sure its not worn, vs faulty component or mechanical failure.

And on the diagnostic charges... VW won't pay for warranty work unless the electronic diagnostic data has been uploaded to VW to prove the diagnosis... So they will always want that money up front. Obviously you get it back if it proves conclusive.

My 3yr warranty expired a couple of weeks ago and what with xenons costing an arm and a leg let alone turbo failure or waterpump (all seemingly common problems) I went online to VW and got a quote. All component cover, £0 excess 10k miles per year (I average 8k) - £334 if paid up front for a year. I thought it would be double that so I may well go for it. Anyone else taken a policy?

Daveh129: Is your factory extended warranty already arranged? I bought it for my R, but as I only just ticked over 3 years, I haven't had a need to use it yet.

However, I have a Polo GTI+ incoming (built last week, but a 5-8 week journey from South Africa via Emden still to do) and intended to get the 5 year warranty. The new pricelists came out about a week ago, and the configurators updated - you don't seem to be able to configure a warranty addition, nor does it feature in the new pricelists for the Polo or the Golf. Unless it is a special request now, or an unintended omission, you may not have the option to get it any more. You used to be able to add it to your order at any time prior to the registration of your car (to get the fully comprehensive factory warranty extension).
