Title: Jimp's Daily and The Adventure of the Missing Springs!
Post by: Jimp on 25 May 2011, 16:11
So here's my daily, a sage green 1.4 16v 75bhp Golf mk5. Sportline spec so it has the super comfy sports seats  :cool: It averages 42ish mpg no matter what I do so it's good for eating up the miles. I've done a few small mods along the way, some have stayed and some have left. I've also bought some bigger stuff like aftermarket projectors and an ABT body kit but none of it stayed cause I thought it looked naff  :undecided: Here are some pictures from scattered periods over the last three years:

Last summer the Vento got all my attention but this summer I decided to drop some dollar on the daily. It's needed some cosmetic sorting for ages and if I didn't do it know it would just keep bugging me every day. So I bought the following:
Fresh set of number plates and holders. Current ones are fecked and dented and wobbly. Several dozy people in morning traffic have played bumper cars with the rear one and kids in an estate I lived in used the front one as target practice  :lipsrsealed:
18" Octavia VRS Zenith wheels
(http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g309/jimmycake/Car/Golf%20mk5/Photo0023.jpg)
Leon Cupra R front splitter.
OEM GTI side skirts and fitting kit.
OEM GTI rear bumper. The current bumper has some scratches and marks from the previously mentioned dozy drivers. And from when I reversed into a crate  :lipsrsealed: :grin:
Oh and these  :evil::
(http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g309/jimmycake/Car/Golf%20mk5/Photo0028.jpg)
The wheels are already on but I have no pictures yet. The car is booked into my local VW specialist for coilover and sideskirt fitting on Thursday. I decided not to DIY the coils this time because it needed some tools I don't have and since I need to use the car every day I really couldn't risk making a mistake. I'm terrible at any kind of body work so I wasn't going to chance the sideskirts anyway  :grin: From what I've read online the coils should drop to the height I want. It will be Thursday evening before I'll know if the helper springs are staying in or not  :grin: The tyres on the 18's should be fine as I followed a chart on mk5golfgti.com (or .co.uk or something) that has tyres sizes that won't rub for different wheel specs and drops. I'm aiming for a ~70mm drop which doesn't sound like much to the mk3 folk but is a pretty hefty drop on a mk5. Sadly the GTI rear bumper won't be fitted Thursday as upper bumper needs colour coding and I couldn't stretch the money that far.
So that's the story so far. Stay tuned folks :afro:

EDIT: Here's a link to that tyre size chart for any other mk5 owners who are interested:

I play bass mostly and some acoustic guitar for myself. I was in a band with a cd out and everything but it all kinda fell apart about two years ago and I haven't been playing much since  :undecided: I'm hoping to get back into a band and gigging soon though, just need to get off my arse and practice a bit  :smiley:

What if we can't wait till Thursday? how will you entertain us then?  :grin:
I can dance for you  :kiss:

The car has to stay in the garage overnight to let the bonding on the side skirts dry. The adhesive tape was too flimsy and was starting to sag pretty quickly. Should have the car back tomorrow around midday. Booked it in for cleaning tomorrow too. I'll hopefully have some pics tomorrow  :smiley:

Coils, skirts, splitter and plates are on. Car is cleaned. Everything is ready for Sunday  :cool: I didn't quite get the 70mm drop, only got 65ish. The front coils are down all the way with the helpers in and the rears have 10mm left with all adjusters and stuff still in. didn't drop the rear to the max as there would have had crazy reverse rake. There's a 1 finger gap all around at the moment. It should settle nicely though as the springs are still quite tense so once they bed it the height should drop that 10mm or so more that I was looking for. It's not as low as the Vento but not everything goes as low as a mk3  :grin: Still, it looks a lot better now  :cool:
Only 3 terrible pictures for the moment, will get some proper ones at the show on Sunday.

The ride on these coils is luuuush. It's like stock  :shocked: If any mk5 owners are looking for coilovers I 100% recommend AP coils :afro:
All in all it's looking a lot better. Looks properly mean when rolling. Arch gap should be gone once the coils settle down. After one day on the coils I'm very happy with how everything turned out  :smiley:

Thanks for the feedback everyone  :smiley:
@lewis1641
The wheels came from a mk2 facelift VRS which is 5x112. Pre-facelift are probably 5x112 too but I can't be 100% sure about that.
@dubsport
The rub strips are staying colour coded as the colour is too nice to have black rub strips. I did run a black badgeless grill briefly but the stock grill looked much better.

The pictures I took yesterday turned out rubbish. Camera phone  :rolleyes: A mate of mine took a few pictures with a proper camera so I'm hoping he'll post them online. I also tried some rolling reflection shots down a street with super polised windows but again they turned out rubbish  :grin: The car still hasn't settled down yet but it's only been a few days. I just want that finger gap gone  :grin:

Swishy angled one taken by a mate with a real camera:

The coils have been on about a week and a half now. Done ~1.5k kms and they have settled down another few mill since those photos. The thick finger gaps is now a thin finger gap, it's all good  :grin: The white mk5 in the background of the last photo belongs to a mate who's on Rokkor coilovers. It wasn't as low as mine at first but he has removed the helpers since and it sits a good bit lower now as can be seen in the photo. It's tempting me to remove mine  :lipsrsealed: If I do I'll need to start finding new places to park in the city  :undecided: :grin:
Title: Re: Jimp's Mad Baller Status Daily - Picture Whoring
Post by: Jimp on 05 July 2011, 18:38
Had some mates in the car the other day, two of which were a bit heavy  :grin: Gave the car a nice drop  :grin: It was tucking tyre all around, a bit more up front, which is exactly how I'd like it to sit. It's had me thinking that I'll remove the helpers at the end of August and go lower  :lipsrsealed: Not going to do it before then because the road to work is quite rough and uneven. I finish up in August though and back in college for a year so no more super terrible roads. I looked at air ride prices but it would cost as much as returning to college  :lipsrsealed:
So come the end of next month I'll finally have a decent drop. Probably won't be able to bring my mates anywhere though  :laugh:

Thanks, but the finger of arch gap that's left is starting to annoy me more and more. When my mates sat into the car and it dropped just the little bit further for there to be no arch gap it looked so much better. Had no clearance issues for that day either, except some scrubbing on full lock which isn't a big deal and easily sorted.

I'd invest in some more outlandish rimmage.

I know you've been secretly spying on some Rotiform BRU's!  :grin:

Three spokes do look mint on mk5s. I was looking at some Saab 3 spokes and Advans before getting the Skodas :lipsrsealed:

Yes, yes you did  :cool:
The mk5 is booked into my local vw specialist for Tuesday. Helpers coming out, aiming for another 20mm drop  :lipsrsealed:

Left the car with my local VW specialists today. Came back after work and it was at the same height as this morning. "Uh oh" I thought, expecting catastrophic news about something broken that needs sorting. I received much worse news. It turns out I CAN'T go any lower up front because the coils don't have helpers  :lipsrsealed: It uses a progressive spring up front and no helpers and I'm already dropped all the way down. I had no idea  :grin: When I got the coils I stuck my head in the box, saw four struts, a bunch of springs, some bump stops and thought "Perfect!". I left it to the guys in the garage to fit, they fit without any hassle, "Perfect!". I never even thought of checking if it was a spring+helper or a single progressive spring because I'm a bellend  :embarassed: They lowered the back another 5mm to even out the stance a bit but there was nothing moving up front.
So where to go from here? I could get shorter springs up front, but can you buy shorter progressive springs? And if so, can you specify spring rates so that it matches the spec of the strut? Maybe AP sell different spec springs that could work  :undecided:.
I could save money for ages and get a bags-over-coils setup  :lipsrsealed: but this is expensive and to be honest I'm hoping to get a different car this time next year, so it wouldn't be worth the investment.
So at the end of the day I have no new pictures and no moar lows. sh!te  :undecided: Well at least I have another ~13mm of lowering out back if I want to reverse rake like a mofo  :grin:

Can you get aftermarket top mounts? I know you can get mk3 ones which lower by 10mm but don't know about the newer stuff? Could always cut a coil if it bothers you that much. Or just save for bags for your new car.

What're you thinking of getting?
