I appreciate this forum is for gti enthusiasts but has anyone else made the transition from aircooled to watercooled?

mk1 golf 1100 I still own
now i have my first gti which is not the fastest vw i have owned the 68 beetle was 1741cc with twin dual choke webers and ran consistent low 13's but only in a straight line. Corners were interesting to say the least.
Anyway back to the question, anyone else "upgraded"??
