Fitting a n/s driveshaft from a Mk2 to a Mk1?
« on: 28 January 2003, 17:15 »
As many of you now know I'm using a Mk2 GTI as a donor car for my Mk1. Last weekend I removed the engine, gearbox and driveshafts from the Mk2.
I've noticed that the n/s driveshaft from the Mk2 is much 'beefier' and at least a 1/4" longer than the one from the Mk1. Also the flanges on the gearbox are larger. I assume this is because the engine from the Mk2 is more powerful.
That being the case and being that I'm puting the engine from the Mk2 into my Mk1, I would have thought that I really ought to try and use the Mk2 driveshafts in the Mk1.
Has any one done that? What I'm thinking is there is a bit of depth to the gearbox flanges and the extra 1/4" might still fit?
If not, I guess my only other option is to swap the flanges of the gearbox over and use the Mk1 driveshafts. But then if I do that, do I then risk snapping a driveshaft?
Any help here would be much appreciated......TIA.
